Modified 1970 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia Coupe

This 1970 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia was sold new at Norman Scott, Inc. in Houston, Texas, and was later modified with a bronze exterior finish, custom brown and beige leather upholstery, a Bugoholics-built 1.9-liter flat-four, and a replacement “Freeway Flyer” four-speed manual transaxle. The engine features a machined case, an Engle camshaft, and Mahle forged pistons and cylinders. Additional revisions include dual 40 HPMX carburetors, a stainless-steel exhaust system, 15″ alloy wheels, four-wheel disc brakes, LED lighting, aftermarket front bucket seats, Dakota Digital gauges, air-conditioning, and an Alpine CD stereo. The car was sold on BaT in March 2023 and offered in January 2026 before it was sold on BaT in March 2026. This Karmann Ghia coupe is offered on consignment by the selling dealer, a BaT Local Partner, in California with a window sticker, a build summary and invoices, and a Montana title.

The car is finished in a hue described by the selling dealer as Lexus Antique Bronze. Exterior details include a vented engine lid, aftermarket side mirrors, LED lighting, dual exhaust outlets, and chrome bumpers with bars and overriders. Paint-protection film is said to cover the front portion of the car and the windshield.

Fuchs-style 15″ alloy wheels with black-finished recesses are mounted with 185/65 General Altimax RT43 tires produced in 2020. Braking is provided by four-wheel discs, and the suspension was overhauled under previous ownership using parts from Bugoholics.

Mini Cooper front bucket seats and the rear bench were repholstered in brown leather with quilted beige inserts, and they are accompanied by a color-coordinated dash pad, door panels, and carpeting. Additional appointments include air conditioning, an Alpine CD stereo with Bluetooth, and three-point seatbelts. The car does not have a heater.

The tilt-adjustable, wood-rimmed steering wheel features a Wolfsburg crest and frames Dakota Digital instrumentation including a 160-mph speedometer, an 8k-rpm tachometer, and auxiliary gauges. The digital odometer indicates 3,700 miles. Total mileage is unknown. The digital instrument cluster clock display has dead pixels.

The air-cooled 1,904cc flat-four was built by Bugoholics of Pasadena, Texas, in 2020, utilizing a machined engine case, a 74mm-stroke crankshaft, an Engle camshaft, Mahle forged pistons and cylinders, enlarged-valve cylinder heads, replacement rocker arms, chrome-moly pushrods and I-beam connecting rods, and replacement engine tins. Dual 40 HPMX Carburetors are installed along with an electronic distributor, an electric fuel pump, an emergency fuel shut-off, and a replacement fuel tank.

Power is delivered to the rear wheels through a “Freeway Flyer” four-speed manual transaxle. A stainless-steel exhaust system has been installed, and the heat exchangers were removed under previous ownership.

There is a lien on the car, and the current owner’s lender will need to be paid off before the title can be transferred to the new owner.
