R-Style, Built 302-Powered 1965 Ford Mustang Fastback Race Car 4-Speed

This 1965 Ford Mustang was built into a track car using a T-code fastback in the early 2000s, and it was used by a Northern California SAAC member at events. The car was maintained for a period by C&S Custom Auto and later Dralle Engineering, going through several build iterations, and has achieved multiple podiums in HSR and SCCA events. Originally white with blue stripes, the car was refinished Viper Red in 2011 and features an R-style front valance, a hood with a scoop, side scoops, and a mesh grille. The current 302ci V8 that was built in 2021 uses Speed-Pro forged pistons, a Bryant Racing crankshaft, aluminum heads, shaft-type rocker arms, and an aluminum intake manifold, and it is linked to a four-speed manual transmission and a Currie 9″ rear end. Inside is a roll cage, race seats, and safety equipment, and the car rides on 15″ Torq Thrust-style alloys and has front disc brakes and adjustable suspension components. This Mustang is now offered by Wob Cars, a BaT Local Partner, on consignment with spares, log books, and a clean California title.

It was painted white with blue stripes between 2002 and 2004, and in 2011 the car was refinished Viper Red with black stripes. It features an R-style front valance, a hood with a scoop, side scoops, and a mesh grille. An R-style vented rear window and side vent covers were added.

The 15″ Torq Thrust-style wheels are mounted with staggered Hoosier slicks. A dual-circuit master cylinder, front disc brakes, and cooling ducts were added, and the suspension has been modified with a larger front sway bar, adjustable dampers, and an adjustable Panhard bar.

The driver is provided a roll cage, a Kirkey race seat, a Crow four-point harnesses, and a Hurst shifter. A Wilwood brake-bias adjustable is mounted to the driver’s right, along with an ignition switch and a fire-suppression system. A Corbeau seat allows a passenger to ride along.

A mix of gauges are set in the metal dashboard, and the tachometer has a shift light. There is no odometer. The split-spoke wheel is mounted on a quick-release hub.

A fuel cell is mounted in the trunk.

The car has had several engines, and the most recent built was a 302-based V8 in 2021. The selling dealer tells us that it uses Speed-Pro forged pistons, a Bryant Racing crankshaft, aluminum heads, shaft-type rocker arms, Isky-rebuilt roller lifters, and an aluminum intake manifold, and the block was bored .030″-over and has 4″ cylinder bores that are coated. Displacement is estimated at 318ci.

The engine has a deep sump with AN fittings, and custom headers are linked to a dual exhaust system with a cross-over and exits ahead of either rear wheel.

The Currie 9″ rear end currently has a 3.89 differential, though a 4.30 gearset is included. The clutch and flywheel were replaced in 2021.

The car achieved multiple podiums in HSR, SVRA, and SCCA events.

Records and images showing the car on track are provided in the gallery.
