George Barris 1970 Cadillac Eldorado “del Cavallero”

This 1970 Cadillac Eldorado is one of a limited number of cars modified as part of a venture by George Barris from the late 1960s into 1970, and it was previously featured on Bat in July 2018. Custom touches include enlarged “Superfly” headlight covers, a landau half roof with decorative irons, a sunroof, and a revised grille with a Cadillac Goddess-style hood ornament. The car rides on 15″ wheels with claw-style faux-spinner covers, and a spare is integrated into the trunk lid. Inside, a gold-color Cadillac-crest steering wheel is joined by white leather upholstery, green headrests, and woodgrain trim. Other details include a retro-look radio, power windows, a power-adjustable front bench, and air conditioning. Power is provided by a 500ci V8 that is paired with a three-speed automatic transmission, and a dual exhaust system has been fitted. This “del Cavallero” Eldorado is now offered in California on consignment by the selling dealer, a BaT Local Partner, with an owner’s manual, George Barris documentation, spare parts, and a clean Florida title.

Finished from the factory in Nottingham Green Firemist (96), the bodywork was modified by fitting a half roof with decorative irons, a sunroof, a smaller rear window, and a revised grille with a hood ornament resembling the Goddess used by Cadillac in the 1930s. “Superfly” headlight covers are accented by green illumination. A spare tire is integrated into the trunk lid, and a white accent strip adorns the rear tail panel.

Covers with claw-style faux spinners accent the 15″ wheels, which are mounted with whitewall tires. The car is equipped with power steering, and stopping power is provided by front disc and rear drum brakes.

The cabin houses a power-operated front bench that is upholstered in white leather, which is complemented by green headrests, a green dashboard, and woodgrain accents. Appointments include a fold-down center armrest, power windows, cruise control, a retro-look radio, and an air conditioning system that has been converted to use R-134a refrigerant.

The gold-finished steering wheel encircles a rendering of a prior version of the company crest. Instrumentation includes a horizontal-sweep 120-mph speedometer alongside a fuel gauge and an analog clock. The five-digit odometer shows 37k miles. The steering wheel is shown with an included white cover in the gallery below.

The 500ci V8 was equipped from the factory with a four-barrel carburetor and was rated at 400 horsepower and 550 lb-ft of torque when new. A revised radiator and a dual-exhaust setup have been installed.

Power is routed to the front wheels through a three-speed Turbo Hydra-Matic automatic transmission. Additional photos of the underside are included in the gallery below.
