1988 Aston Martin V8 Volante Series 2 7.0L

This 1988 Aston Martin V8 Volante is a US-market, Series 2 example that was delivered new through Palm Beach Motor Cars in Florida circa March 1988. Chassis 15644 was later relocated to Europe, where it is believed to have spent time in Germany, the UK, and Switzerland before undergoing a multi-year refurbishment by marque specialists RS Williams in Surrey, England, from 2009 to 2015 totaling over £260k. Work involved a repaint in metallic gray, an interior re-trim in tan leather, and an engine rebuild that took the V585 V8 to 7.0 liters of displacement. The car features hand-crafted aluminum alloy body panels and wears a black soft top as well as Cibié driving lights and Lucas fog lights. It rides on 16″ Ronal wheels coupled with Koni shocks and ventilated disc brakes at all four corners. Inside, a wood-rimmed Nardi steering wheel is accompanied by wood accents as well as air conditioning and a Becker stereo. The engine is equipped with Weber-Marelli electronic fuel injection, a remapped ECU, and a modified exhaust system, while shifting is through a three-speed automatic transmission linked with a Powr-Lok limited-slip differential. Acquired by the current owner in 2024, this V8 Volante Series 2 is now offered on dealer consignment by Wob —a BaT Local Partner—with manufacturer’s literature, refurbishment records, a clean Carfax report, and a California title.

Introduced in June 1978, the V8 Volante featured hand-built aluminum bodywork as well as a power-operated convertible top. The closed “power bulge” hood was carried over from the Series 4 coupe to clear the quad Weber carburetors of the V540 and later V580 engines specified for the soft-top Volante, and additional styling details included a mesh grille, fender vents, and an integrated rear spoiler.

Believed to have left the factory finished in Salisbury Blue, this example was stripped and underwent bodywork before being repainted in its current metallic gray finish in 2009. Round Cibié headlights and driving lights are paired with Lucas fog lights up front, and the car is further equipped with a black Everflex soft top, stainless-steel rocker panels, and wraparound bumpers with overriders.

The 16″ Ronal wheels are mounted with BFGoodrich g-Force Sport Comp 2 tires measuring 255/50. The car was equipped from the factory with an independent front and de Dion rear suspension as well as ventilated disc brakes with inboard-mounted units out back. The suspension and brakes were overhauled and an RS Williams anti-roll bar kit and Koni shocks were installed in 2011.

The front bucket and rear bench seats were upholstered in tan leather and the interior trim was re-chromed in 2010, while a Becker head unit and aftermarket speakers were installed in 2011. Wood accents adorn the interior, and further amenities include air conditioning, a heater, a quartz clock, and power windows.

The split-spoke Nardi steering wheel features a wood rim and sits ahead of Tudor instrumentation including a 270-km/h speedometer, a 7k-rpm tachometer, and auxiliary gauges for oil temperature, coolant temperature, oil pressure, fuel level, and voltage. A prior ad for the car notes that the factory odometer indicated 26k miles when it was replaced with the current metric unit in 2011. The reset five-digit odometer currently shows 4,500 kilometers (~2,800 miles), and the selling dealer states that true mileage is unknown.

The V585 V8 was modified to displace 7.0 liters as part of a rebuild in 2010 that involved installation of a balanced crankshaft, Cosworth connecting rods, and Cosworth pistons. The engine is equipped with Weber-Marelli electronic fuel injection and controlled by a remapped ECU.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a three-speed Chrysler Torqueflite automatic transmission and a Powr-Lok limited slip differential. Records indicate that uprated half shafts were installed in 2011. The transmission is fitted with a finned pan from TCI Auto, and the custom exhaust system does not feature catalytic converters.

The Carfax report is free of accidents or other reported damage from two entries in October 2023.

The car is not currently registered and cannot pass a California emissions test, therefore it cannot be sold to an in-state private party buyer.

There is currently a lien on the car, and the owner’s lender will need to be paid off before the title can be transferred to the next owner.
