1959 Mercedes-Benz 190SL

Asking Price: $182,500

This 1959 Mercedes-Benz 190SL spent time in California prior to a multi-year restoration carried out between 2009 and 2013. Work involved repainting the car red, replacing the tan convertible top, refreshing the tan interior, overhauling the suspension, and rebuilding the 1.9-liter inline-four and four-speed manual transmission. The car has dual Solex carburetors and 13″ steel wheels with body-color hubcaps along with a boot cover and a Becker Europa AM/FM radio. This 190SL is now offered on dealer consignment in California with build sheet copies, manufacturer’s literature, a tool kit, and a clean Montana title.

Factory-finished in black, the car was stripped to bare metal and repainted red during the restoration, which also included replacing the windshield, tan convertible top, and boot cover. Exterior details include Wagner headlights, a driver-side mirror, a bright windshield surround and grille, and chrome bumpers with overriders.

The 13″ steel wheels wear chrome trim rings, hubcaps with body-color accents, and American Classic whitewall tires. The car is equipped with a double-wishbone front suspension, rear swing axles with coil springs, and power-assisted drum brakes, all of which were overhauled during the restoration. The steering box was replaced in 2023.

The cabin was previously trimmed in red and was fitted with replacement tan leather and carpeting during the restoration. Amenities include an analog clock, a dashboard-mounted rearview mirror, and a Becker Europa AM/FM radio.

The replacement two-spoke steering wheel frames VDO instrumentation including a 140-mph speedometer and a 7k-rpm tachometer as well as gauges for oil pressure, water temperature, and fuel level. The five-digit odometer shows 841 miles. Total mileage is unknown.

The 1.9-liter M121 inline-four was overhauled under prior ownership and is equipped with Solex PHH 44 carburetors, zinc-plated hardware, and a black-painted air cleaner. Work in 2023 included rebuilding the starter, changing the oil, and replacing the spark plugs, fuel pump, and fuel filter.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission that was overhauled under previous ownership. The underside of the car has been refinished in dark gray, and additional underbody photos can be seen in the gallery below.

Manufacturer’s literature is included along with a tool kit, build sheet copies, and a pair of black California license plates.
