1.8L Miata-Powered Dowsetts Tipo 184

This Tipo 184 is an open-wheel, single-seat roadster that was built by the seller using a kit fabricated by Dowsetts in the UK. Completed in early 2025, the car is powered by a 1.8-liter DOHC inline-four sourced from a Mazda MX-5 Miata, which also contributed its five-speed manual transmission, limited-slip differential, and suspension subframes. The composite bodywork is mounted to a tubular steel chassis with an integrated roll hoop, adjustable coilovers, four-wheel disc brakes, and 16” knock-off wire wheels. A Kirkey seat is joined by a Moto-Lita steering wheel, and other highlights include a MegaSquirt 2 engine management system, variable valve timing, a Brooklands Aeroscreen, a side-mounted exhaust, and Sebring-style side mirrors. Previously sold on BaT in September 2025, this Tipo 184 is now offered on consignment in California by the selling dealer, a BaT Local Partner, with an Indiana title listing it as a 2021 Dowsetts.

The Tipo 184 was conceived by Wheeler Dealers host Ant Anstead as an homage to the Alfa Romeo 158, which dominated the Grand Prix from 1938 until 1950. The car features composite bodywork mounted to a tubular steel spaceframe and can be ordered as a kit or fully assembled. Drivetrain components and suspension subframes are sourced from a second-generation Mazda MX-5 Miata.

This example was built using a 2002 MX-5 Miata as the donor vehicle. The bodywork is finished in red, and headlights have been added behind the aluminum grille. Details include a louvered hood and side panels as well as a Brooklands Aeroscreen and a gray roll hoop. The paintwork has blistered under the exhaust system.

Silver-finished 16” knock-off wire wheels are retained with two-eared spinners and wrapped in 6.50” Blockley tires. The suspension has been fitted with adjustable coilovers, and braking is handled by four-wheel discs.

The cockpit houses a Kirkey bucket seat and a separate headrest trimmed in black upholstery. Additional appointments include a TRS harness, an aluminum dashboard fascia, toggle-switch controls, and perforated floorboards.

The Moto-Lita steering wheel has a wood rim and frames white-dial instrumentation consisting of a 150-mph speedometer and a tachometer with a 7k-rpm redline as well as gauges for oil pressure, coolant temperature, and fuel level. The digital odometer indicates 49k miles. The Indiana title carries a Not Actual Mileage odometer brand.

The 1.8-liter DOHC inline-four features variable valve timing, and a MegaSquirt 2 engine-management system has been added. The car may not be eligible for Tipo Series competition.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a five-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential.

Invoices and handwritten ownership notes are displayed in the gallery.

The car is titled as a 2021 Dowsetts using the assigned VIN MVIN387740IND. The title carries a Not Actual Mileage odometer brand and a Specialty Constructed Vehicle brand. The car has not been inspected by the California Air Resources Board or Bureau of Automotive Repair.
