This 1965 Porsche 911 is a short-wheelbase coupe that was delivered new to Competition Motors of Culver City, California, and was restored under previous ownership before it was listed on later sold on BaT in September 2022. The car is finished in Dolphin Grey over black leatherette upholstery with Pepita cloth seat inserts, and power comes from a rebuilt 2.0-liter flat-six paired with a five-speed manual transaxle. Features include dual Solex carburetors, 15″ chrome ventilated wheels, chrome bumper guards, pop-out quarter windows, European-specification headlights, fog lights, a wood-rimmed steering wheel, wood dashboard trim, and a Blaupunkt radio, while modifications consist of 930 timing chain tensioners, an electric fuel pump, and three-point seat belts. This SWB 911 is now offered in California at no reserve by Wob Cars, a BaT Local Partner, on consignment with a copy of the Kardex, tools, a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, service records, and a Colorado title.
Delivered from the factory in Dolphin Grey (6410), the car was repainted in red before it was refinished in its factory color under previous ownership. Features include chrome bumper guards, a single polished exhaust outlet, gold script on the rear decklid, pop-out quarter windows, a driver-side mirror, four-screw horn grilles, European-specification headlights, and Hella fog lights. A collection of glass etchings can be seen in the gallery below.
A pair of chromed roof bars have been added since the last auction.
The restored 1965-dated chrome ventilated wheels wear polished Porsche crest hubcaps and are mounted with 165VR15 Michelin XAS NO tires. A matching spare wheel and tire are mounted in the front trunk. Stopping power is provided by discs at all four corners.
The cockpit features seats trimmed in black leatherette with cloth Pepita inserts. Equipment includes a black leather dash pad, wood dash trim, a Blaupunkt push-button radio, a loudspeaker, folding rear seats, three-point seat belts, and salt-and-pepper carpets. A Webasto gas heater with a two-speed blower motor was optioned from the factory, though it is currently disconnected.
The wood-rimmed steering wheel frames reconditioned VDO green letter instrumentation including a central tachometer with a 6,800-rpm redline, a 150-mph speedometer, a clock, and combination gauges. The five-digit odometer shows 74k miles, approximately 100 of which were added under current ownership. Total mileage is unknown.
The 2.0-liter 901/01 flat-six features twin Solex carburetors and was factory rated at 130 horsepower. The engine and five-speed manual transaxle are both claimed to have been rebuilt under previous ownership, and it was reportedly fitted with new pistons, cylinders, connecting rods, bearings, valves, and guides at that time along with a larger oil pump and 930 chain tensioners and guides.
Engine stamping ☆901392☆ is depicted above and corresponds with the number listed on the Kardex below.
The transaxle is stamped with the identification number 101343, which also corresponds with the number shown on the Kardex.
The copy of the Kardex shows delivery to Competition Motors and lists the factory colors, equipment, and powertrain numbers.
A handwritten summary of the work completed during the restoration is detailed in the gallery.
