1985 Renault R5 Turbo 2 Type 8221

This 1985 Renault R5 Turbo 2 is the 27th of 200 street-specification Type 8221 examples built to homologate the R5 Maxi Turbo for WRC Group B competition with an aluminum roof and a larger 1,437cc inline-four. The car is said to have been brought to the US in the late 1990s, and it now shows 28k kilometers (~17k miles). It is finished in red with contrasting Turbo 2 graphics and features a vented hood, a roof spoiler, and boxed fender flares. The mid-engined hatchback rides on 15″ Gotti three-piece wheels and is equipped with an independent suspension as well as ventilated disc brakes. Inside, Recaro bucket seats trimmed in black Alcantara are accompanied by a MOMO steering wheel and Jaeger instrumentation. The turbocharged and intercooled engine is linked with a five-speed manual transaxle and a limited-slip differential. Work in 2025 involved replacing the tires in addition to the rear axle seals. Previously listed on BaT in April 2025, this R5 Turbo 2 is offered on dealer consignment by Wob, a BaT Local Partner, with service records and an Arkansas title.

Designed for homologation in FIA Group 4 competition, the R5 Turbo debuted at the 1980 Brussels Motor Show in January 1980 with styling penned by Marc Deschamps and Marcello Gandini at Bertone. The Turbo 2 debuted in 1983 and utilized more standardized components than the earlier variant, while the Type 8221 homologation model debuted in 1984 with an aluminum roof and a displacement increase of 35cc.

This example is finished in red with contrasting Turbo 2 side graphics along with a vented hood, a roof spoiler, and quarter panel intakes. Cibié H4 headlights and yellow-lens fog lights are equipped up front, and a single side mirror is affixed to the driver’s door.

Three-piece 15″ Gotti wheels were mounted with 205/50 front and 285/40 rear Pirelli Cinturato P7 tires in April 2025. The car rides on an independent double-wishbone suspension with torsion bars up front and a coil spring setup out back. Stopping power is provided by four-wheel disc brakes with vented rotors.

The bolstered Recaro bucket seats are attached to fixed mounts and trimmed in black Alcantara. They are accompanied by tan door panels and carpets, and further interior appointments include a Veglia digital clock, a heater, and power windows.

The microsuede-wrapped MOMO steering wheel fronts a 140-mph speedometer and a Jaeger 8k-rpm tachometer as well as auxiliary gauges. The six-digit odometer shows 28k kilometers (~17k miles).

The cargo shelf lifts to expose an insulated engine bay, which houses a 1,437cc inline-four equipped with a single Garrett turbocharger, an intercooler, and Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection.

Power is routed to the rear wheels through a five-speed manual transaxle and a limited-slip differential. The rear axle seals were replaced in April 2025.

The Carfax report is free of accidents or other reported damage from its first entry in March 1999.
