1983 Volkswagen Rabbit GTI Callaway Turbo Stage II

This 1983 Volkswagen Rabbit GTI was initially delivered to Riverside Volkswagen of Gallipolis, Ohio, in December 1982, and its 1.8-liter inline-four was fitted with a Stage II turbocharger system by Callaway Turbosystems of Old Lyme, Connecticut, in August 1983. Finished in Cashmere White over red velour, the car also features a five-speed manual transaxle, a Turbonetics wastegate, a Borla exhaust muffler, a rear window wiper, 14” alloy wheels, a heater, and a cassette stereo. The car spent time in Pennsylvania before it was sold on BaT in April 2020, and it was located in Massachusetts before being sold on BaT in November 2021. This Callaway-modified Mk1 GTI shows 19k miles and is offered in California on dealer consignment with a clean Carfax report and a clean Montana title.

The car is finished in Cashmere White (LE9C) with a front air dam, a rear window wiper, front and rear impact bumpers, and red and black accents. Close-up photos of the paint, trim, and glass can be seen in the gallery below.

Factory 14″ snowflake wheels are wrapped in 185/60 Dunlop Direzza ZIII tires with production date codes from 2020. The GTI came from the factory with a sport-tuned suspension, front and rear sway bars, and ventilated front disc brakes, and modifications that were part of the Callaway package reportedly included a heavy-duty front sway bar and lower stress bar.

The front bucket seats and the rear bench seat are trimmed in red velour, and they are accompanied by color-coordinated door panels and carpets. Appointments include a golf-ball shift knob, a heater, an AM/FM/cassette stereo, and an analog clock. The headliner is sagging.

The four-spoke steering wheel frames an 85-mph speedometer, a tachometer, and gauges for coolant temperature and fuel level. A VDO boost gauge is mounted to the right of the instrument cluster, and an additional three-gauge pod in the center console includes voltage and oil temperature readouts as well as an analog clock. The six-digit mechanical odometer shows 19k miles, a few of which were added under current ownership.

The 1.8-liter inline-four was fitted with a Stage II turbocharger by Callaway Turbosystems in August 1983, which raised rated output to 200 horsepower when new. The timing belt was changed circa 2021.

Power is sent to the front wheels through a five-speed manual transaxle. A Turbonetics wastegate and a Borla muffler have been fitted.

The Carfax is free of accidents or other reported damage.
