This 1973 Volkswagen Beetle was refurbished in 2018 by Darryl’s Air-Cooled Engines of Neosho, Missouri, and acquired by the seller on BaT in December 2022. Refurbishment work included repainting the body in metallic blue, reupholstering the interior, and installing a replacement 1.9L flat-four that sends power to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transaxle. Equipment includes chrome-finished 15″ EMPI wheels, four-wheel disc brakes, Bilstein shocks, a narrowed front end, a wood-rimmed steering wheel, an EMPI billet aluminum shift knob, ISP West and VDO instrumentation, an A-1 Sidewinder exhaust system, an EMPI oil filler kit and polished serpentine belt pulley system, and twin carburetors with polished air cleaners. Work under current ownership is said to consist of replacing the left front hub seal, turn signal switch, valve cover gaskets, and spark plugs. This Beetle is now offered on dealer consignment in California with a car cover and an Ohio title.
The body was refinished in Marathon Blue Metallic (L96M) following the installation of a replacement front clip and floor panels during the aforementioned 2018 refurbishment. Additional work included replacing the windshield, wiper arm assemblies, running boards, chrome bumpers, front windows, rear decklid lock, and glass and body seals.
Chrome-finished 15″ EMPI wheels are mounted with 165/80 Nexen SB-802 tires, and a spare steel wheel is stored in the front trunk. The car is fitted with Bilstein shocks, a narrowed front end with drop spindles and four-wheel disc brakes. The left front hub seal was replaced and the steering shaft was lubricated under current ownership.
The replacement front bucket seats and rear bench were reupholstered in beige vinyl and are accompanied by color-coordinated door panels. Sound-deadening material was installed within the cabin as part of the interior refresh along with a replacement dashboard, headliner, rearview mirror, kick panels, air vents, and gray carpets. Additional equipment includes an EMPI billet aluminum shift knob, a heater, and three-point front seat belts.
The wood-rimmed EMPI steering wheel wears a Wolfsburg-crest center cap and fronts ISP West instrumentation including a 120-mph speedometer, a tachometer, and a fuel level gauge. VDO gauges for oil pressure, voltage, and oil temperature are centrally mounted within the dash. The replacement five-digit odometer shows 700 miles, and the speedometer cable was replaced in 2018. Total mileage on this 1973 Volkswagen Beetle is unknown.
The replacement 1.9L flat-four was rebuilt and installed by Darryl’s Air-Cooled Engines as part of the build and features a replacement wiring harness, a Bosch ignition coil, an EMPI oil filler kit, a polished serpentine belt pulley system, and twin carburetors with polished air cleaners. Work under current ownership is said to consist of adjusting the valves, performing an oil change, adjusting the carburetor, and replacing the valve cover gaskets and spark plugs. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transaxle. The clutch, shift rod coupler, drive axles, rear axle bearings, and transmission mounts were replaced during the refurbishment, and the car is equipped with an A-1 Sidewinder exhaust system with dual outlets.
