The Porsche RS60: A True Motorsport Legend

Here at WOB Cars, we have the privilege of working with some of the most extraordinary collector vehicles. As a true icon of Porsche’s motorsport legacy, managing the Porsche RS60 Spyder has been a particular honor.

One of just seventeen ever RS60 Spyders ever built, this vehicle is not just rare – it’s a timeless piece of Porsche heritage.

The Story of the Porsche RS60 Spyder

The RS60 was introduced in January of 1960 and stood as the final evolution of Porsche’s famed aluminum-bodied, four-cam Spyder series. This lineage began with the legendary Type 550 in 1953.

Engineers stretched the wheelbase by four inches to improve engine access and cockpit space, while adopting unequal-length wishbone rear suspension and improved brakes. Subtle updates to the Wendler-built aluminum bodywork, including a taller, FIA-compliant windshield giving the RS60 its distinctive appearance.

Coming in at a dry weight of 1,210lbs and equipped with a Porsche’s Type 547/3 four-cam engine, the RS60 was well-suited to make its mark on the track. In fact, in 1960 Porsche secured 2nd in the FIA World Sportscar Championship with victories at the 12 Hour of Serbing and the Targa Florio.

Chassis 718-060

WOB Cars is lucky to represent a stand out example: chassis 718-060. It was delivered new to driver William Wuesthoff and quickly made its mark on the US racing scene amassing an impressive 12 class wins between 1960 and 1963.

Powered by its original matching-numbers Type 547/3 four-cam engine, the RS60’s 160-horsepower flat-four propelled it to numerous victories, including triumphs at Road America, Meadowdale, and Mosport. Unlike many of its contemporaries, this RS60 avoided major incidents, thanks to Wuesthoff’s precision driving and meticulous care.

Still wearing its original Wendler built aluminum body and featuring period-correct upgrades – including annular disc brakes fitted by Porsche legendary Bruce Jennings – this RS60 remains one of the finest and most original examples remaining. With a competition pedigree that saw it battle Ferrari Testarossas and Lotus 19s, and a rare combination of authenticity and performance, this RS60 stands as a true icon of Porsche’s motorsport legacy.
