As the success of the BMW Isetta 250 and 300 continued, BMW recognized the necessity to enlarge their product offering by producing a viable four-seater model. Still recovering from the devastation in post-war Germany, BMW was scrambling to retain ownership of their company and generate sales growth. The Isetta 300 was a turning point for the company, and BMW earnestly hoped to expand on that with the larger 600 model. The design was kept simple since BMW had already re-engineered most of the 300. To meet the extended specifications they chose to utilize the entire front section of the 300 and then build a box frame out back to elongate the 300 enough for a second bench seat. The rear suspension (semi-trailing arms) and engine carrier were redesigned to cope with the expansion and a larger 600cc flat-twin air-cooled motorcycle motor. Since the front portion of the 300 was retained for the 600, a side door (passenger side) was created to allow easy entry to the rear seats.
Although projections were high, the 600 never lived up to the expectations or success of the Isetta 300. During 1957 to the close of production (due to low demand) a paucity of roughly 35,000 BMW 600 was produced, making it far scarcer than the 300’s numbers. Our example for sale today is a 1958 model year finished in two-tone red and white paint that was applied in 2012. During that exterior refresh, U.S. market bumpers and overriders were added, and the windshield was replaced along with a new seal. Riding along on 10” polished steel wheels with the BMW roundel centers, the wheels have had a powder coating of cream paint to enhance the aesthetic, although they note some flaws in the finish. Whitewall Kings tires had had Atlas whitewall inserts installed to really fit the fifties feel.
Inside, the 600 is nearly stock, although the odometer has been reset after the mechanical rebuild at Theo’s Microcar. The original two-spoke steering wheel, metal gear lever with ball shift knob, and the instrument panel are all true to the 1958 production. Complimenting the exterior paintwork, the vinyl seat coverings and door panels in the front and rear are two-two red and white – all are in beautiful condition without tears.
Theo’s Microcar, during prior ownership to the current owner, was charged with a complete mechanical restoration and the 600 still performs especially well after. The 582cc flat-twin was rebuilt and is not original to this particular 600 but sends steady power to the rear wheels. The seller notes that there are sparse puffs of white smoke when cold which diminishes when the motor is up to temperature. Recently (in preparation for the sale) an oil service with a filter change was performed. At the time of the engine rebuild, the four-speed transmission was also open, inspected, and rebuilt alongside the harmonic dampener.
Underneath, the front independent suspension is identical to that of the 300 and was also previously rebuilt. During this time the steering linkage was also replaced and refurbished with new components. Additionally, the braking system received significant attention with new brake hoses, fluid, and a master cylinder. During the pre-sale oil service, all of the brakes were re-adjusted. The previous owner also approved work and repairs to the CV joints, wheel cylinders, and wheel bearings which were all changed out for new pieces during the restoration work that all took place approximately 1,250 miles ago. Considering the spectrum of the mechanical work and the pristine interior and exterior it would be understated not to evaluate this excellent example of a 600 as close to original as one could get – so start your bidding!
