This 1970 BMW 2800CS was initially distributed through Max Hoffman Motors and sold new in California, where it is said to have remained registered with one owner for more than 30 years. It then spent time in Colorado before it was relocated to New Jersey and acquired by the current owner on BaT in March 2018. A 3.4-liter inline-six and five-speed manual transmission were installed under prior ownership, and work since 2018 has involved installing a Megasquirt fuel injection system, replacing the clutch kit and exhaust system, resurfacing the flywheel, installing a rebuilt steering box and power steering pump, and refurbishing interior components. Finished in silver over tan leather, the car also has Coupeking 16″ wheels, Bilstein dampers, four-wheel disc brakes, a CSL-style front spoiler, air conditioning, and an Alpine head unit. This E9 is now offered on dealer consignment in California with a tool kit, a car cover, and a clean New Jersey title.
The Karmann-built bodywork was refinished in its current shade of silver prior to the seller’s acquisition. A CSL-style front spoiler, Hella driving lights, dual side mirrors, and bright trim are fitted. Work in 2021 involved rolling the fender lips, replacing the rear windshield gasket, and adjusting the window tracks.
Coupeking 16″ Alpina-style alloy wheels are mounted with Continental ExtremeContact tires, and four-wheel disc brakes are fitted. A rebuilt power steering pump and box have been installed, and the tie rods were replaced in 2022. Bilstein dampers are fitted along with revised springs and sway bars.
The cabin houses front bucket seats and contoured rear seats trimmed in tan leather. Work since 2018 has involved filling speaker holes, replacing the rear window gasket, and refurbishing the dashboard, rear deck panel, and door cards. An Alpine head unit and an air conditioning kit have also been installed.
The three-spoke steering wheel fronts a 150-mph speedometer, a tachometer, an analog clock, and gauges for fuel level and coolant temperature. The five-digit odometer on this E9 shows 95k miles, and total mileage is unknown.
The 3.4-liter M30 inline-six was reportedly sourced from an E32 7-series and installed under prior ownership. A Megasquirt fuel injection system was equipped in 2022, and a gear reduction starter was also installed at that time. The engine temperature sensor switch, distributor cap and rotor, and exhaust system were also replaced under current ownership.
Power is routed to the rear wheels through a five-speed manual transmission. A replacement clutch kit was installed and the flywheel was resurfaced in 2021.
