1992 Ford Mustang SSP Police Car 5-Speed

This 1992 Ford Mustang LX notchback is a Special Service Package (SSP) example that served with the California Highway Patrol for approximately a decade until its transition to private ownership in September 2003. The car wears a black and white police livery with California Highway Patrol graphics and lettering, and it is equipped with the Handling Suspension Package as well as cloth upholstery, spotlights, 15″ wheels, a light controller, a GE radio, a Uniden scanner, and emergency lighting mounted to the windshield and on the rear parcel shelf. Power is from a 302ci V8 paired with a five-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential. After its retirement from police use, the car spent time in Ohio, Florida, and Georgia, where the selling dealer recently acquired it. This Fox-body SSP is now offered in California by the selling dealer with police-related accessories, a nonfunctional replica firearm, an accident-free Carfax report, and a clean Georgia title.

The body wears a black-and-white California Highway Patrol livery with related emblems and lettering, and an impaired-driving bumper sticker can be seen on the rear bumper cover. Other exterior details include antennas, power mirrors, A-pillar-mounted spotlights, and a dual exhaust system.

The 15″ alloy wheels are mounted with General XP 2000 A4 tires. Standard equipment included the Handling Suspension Package, which features variable-rate springs and a Quadra-Shock rear setup along with power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering. Braking is handled by power-assisted front discs and rear drums.

The cabin features front bucket seats and a rear bench upholstered in cloth. Air conditioning was equipped from the factory, and police equipment includes a shotgun mount, a light controller, a GE Communications radio, a Uniden scanner, multi-color emergency lights on the rear shelf, forward-facing emergency lighting adjacent to the rearview mirror, and a fire extinguisher mounted in the trunk. The firearm depicted in the photographs is a nonfunctional replica that is included in the sale.

SSP-equipped Mustangs received a 160-mph speedometer, and the five-digit odometer shows 69k miles. An October 2008 entry in the Carfax report lists an “Exceeds Mechanical Limits” title issued by the state of Florida at that time, and a mileage discrepancy is indicated in another entry earlier that month. Total mileage is unknown.

The 302ci V8 was factory rated at 225 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a five-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential.

A wood organizer in the trunk contains police-related accessories.

The Carfax report is free of accidents or other reported damage, and it notes the aforementioned “Exceeds Mechanical Limits” title and mileage inconsistency.

The car last passed a California emissions check on its most recent attempt in March 2001. Bidders should review their local laws related to police-liveried vehicles before committing to purchase.
