This 1988 BMW M5 is one of 1,340 examples produced for the North American market. It is powered by a 3.5-liter inline-six paired with a five-speed manual transmission and is finished in Black over Natur leather. The car is equipped with a limited-slip differential, 16″ basketweave alloy wheels, an electric sunroof, heated power-adjustable front sport seats, a Blaupunkt Bremen SQR46 stereo, cruise control, and air conditioning. This E28 M5 is now offered in California on dealer consignment with the owner’s manual and a clean Michigan title.
All US-spec E28 M5s were finished in Schwarz (086), and this example features front and rear spoilers, an electric sunroof, fog lights, and a dual-outlet exhaust. Detailed photos of the exterior are provided in the gallery.
Silver-finished 16″ basketweave alloy wheels are mounted with Michelin Pilot Sport All-Season tires. Braking is handled by ventilated front and solid rear discs with ABS. The power steering pump was replaced in April 2021, while the selling dealer notes that the power steering pressure hose, hydraulic brake booster, and the brake fluid were replaced in preparation for the sale.
The heated power-adjustable front sport seats are trimmed in Natur leather, and matching upholstery extends to the rear seats, armrests, lower dashboard, and center stack. Additional amenities include a Blaupunkt Bremen SQR46 stereo, an onboard computer, power windows, air conditioning, and cruise control.
The three-spoke M-Tech steering wheel frames a 170-mph speedometer, a tachometer with a 6,900-rpm redline, and auxiliary gauges for coolant temperature and fuel level. The six-digit odometer shows 59k miles, and mileage inconsistencies are listed in April 1993 and October 2017 entries of the Carfax report. Total mileage is unknown.
The 3.5-liter S38B35 inline-six features individual throttle bodies and was factory-rated at 256 horsepower and 243 lb-ft of torque. Service in preparation for the sale involved replacing the water pump, idle air control valve hose, distributor cap and rotor, spark plugs, and ignition wires.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a Getrag 280 five-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential.
The Carfax report shows the aforementioned mileage inconsistencies.
