1972 Citroen SM 5-Speed

This 1972 Citroën SM is said to have been previously by Jerry Hathaway of SM World and is finished in metallic gray over brown leather upholstery. Power is supplied by a 2.7-liter Maserati V6 fitted with triple Weber carburetors, while shifting is through a five-speed manual transaxle. Further equipment includes a hydropneumatic suspension system, self-centering power steering, four-wheel disc brakes, and 15″ wheels with stainless-steel covers in addition to air conditioning, an AM/FM radio, and power windows. The suspension was serviced under previous ownership in March 2022, and work following the current owner’s acquisition on BaT in January 2023 has involved performing paint correction as well as replacing the primary timing chain, the high-pressure hydraulic switch, and the brake accumulator. This SM is now offered at no reserve on dealer consignment with service records from SM World and Marrs Automotive in California along with a clean California title.

The body of the 1972 Citroën SM was refinished in its current shade of metallic gray under previous ownership, and paint correction was performed in March 2023 following the car’s acquisition by the current owner. Exterior details include US-specification headlights, bright bumpers and trim, dual side mirrors, rear wheel skirts, and dual exhaust outlets. The right fender and front lower valance were repaired and refinished following a collision in April 2018. Scuffs and dents can be seen around the body, peeling paint is noted on the inside of the left door, and paint bubbles are visible along the bottom of the doors as well as the left quarter panel.

Steel 15″ wheels wear polished stainless-steel covers and are mounted with 215/65 Michelin Defender. The car is equipped with self-centering power steering and rides on a self-leveling and height-adjustable hydropneumatic suspension. Stopping power is provided by power-assisted four-wheel discs with inboard-mounted units up front. Work in March 2023 involved replacing the high-pressure hydraulic switch, the brake accumulator, and the right-rear suspension boot.

The front bucket seats and contoured rear bench are upholstered in brown leather that extends to the door and side panels. The suspension height can be set via a lever to the left of the driver, and the Citroën-branded AM/FM radio is connected to aftermarket stereo components. Further details include air conditioning, floor-mounted brake pedal, and three-point front seatbelts. Dual relays were fitted to the power window regulators and the motor gears were replaced under previous ownership. The dash is cracked, the interior trim is peeling, a tear is present on the center console sides, the rear hatch struts are weak, and the dome light lens and bezel do not latch properly.

The single-spoke steering wheel fronts Jaeger instrumentation including a 160-mph speedometer and a tachometer with a 6,500-rpm redline accompanied by an array of indicator lights. Auxiliary gauges indicating water temperature, fuel level, and oil temperature are located in the center of the dash along with an analog clock. The five-digit mechanical odometer shows 71k miles, approximately 2k of which were added under current ownership. The tachometer functions intermittently.

The 2.7-liter V6 was sourced from Maserati, a subsidiary of Citroën at the time, and is equipped with three Weber two-barrel carburetors as well as quad camshafts. Aftermarket exhaust headers and a stainless-steel exhaust system have been added along with an electric starter solenoid. Service during previous ownership included replacing the battery and a valve cover gasket as well as adjusting the distributor and repairing the ignition system. The primary timing chain and various seals and O-rings were replaced in March 2023 following the current owner’s acquisition.

Power is sent to the front wheels through a five-speed manual transaxle mounted ahead of the engine. The shifter linkage was adjusted under previous ownership in March 2022.

The California title is noted as a duplicate.
