1961 Cadillac Fleetwood Miller-Meteor Ambulance Project

This 1961 Cadillac Fleetwood was converted by Miller-Meteor of Piqua, Ohio, for use as an ambulance. It is finished in red with a white roof and features a Beacon Ray roof light, a rear access door, and curved rear glass. On the inside, the cabin is equipped with a bench seat up front along with a center dividing panel, rear jump seats, and a removable gurney. The non-running 390ci V8 is fitted with a four-barrel carburetor and mated to a four-speed automatic transmission. Further equipment includes 15″ steel wheels, finned drum brakes, and power steering along with a heater and a push-button AM radio. Acquired by the selling dealer in 2024, the car is described as a project in need of cosmetic and mechanical work. This Miller-Meteor ambulance is now offered at no reserve in California on a bill of sale with an owner’s manual and a collection of spare parts.

Formed following the combination of Miller Motor Car Co and the A.J. Miller Company, Miller-Meteor built hearses and ambulances based on Cadillac commercial chassis from the late 1950s through the late 1970s at the company’s Piqua, Ohio, assembly facility. This example is finished in red with a white high-top roof and features a Beacon Ray roof light, Miller-Meteor fender badges, a rear access door, and curved rear glass. Rust and cracked paint are noted around the body, and the right-rear wheel spat is missing.

Black-finished 15″ steel wheels are mounted with 215/75 Nexen thin whitewall tires. The car is equipped with power steering as well as power-assisted finned drum brakes.

The forward cabin houses a single bench seat trimmed in black and gray vinyl. An ambulance insignia sits atop the dash, and further details include a heater, a push-button AM radio, and a clock. There is a hole in the passenger-side footwell, and rust is visible in the floors and along the doors.

The two-tone steering wheel frames a horizontal-sweep 120-mph speedometer and readouts for coolant temperature and fuel level. The five-digit odometer shows 43k miles, and total mileage is unknown.

The rear of the ambulance is separated from the front cabin by a bulkhead with a sliding window and is outfitted with a pair of jump seats as well as storage compartments, cloth curtains, linoleum flooring, and a removable gurney.

The 390ci V8 was factory rated at 325 horsepower. It is fitted with a four-barrel carburetor and does not currently run. A replacement fuel pump was installed and the fuel tank and spark plugs were cleaned under current ownership.

Power is delivered to the rear wheels via a four-speed automatic transmission. Rust is visible on underbody components.

The Miller Meteor body tag above lists the vehicle as a Duplex model and bears the serial number 61Z010362, which is consistent with a 1961 Cadillac built on a commercial chassis.
