This 1959 Mercedes-Benz 220S sedan features a folding Webasto sunroof and is powered by a 2.2-liter inline-six paired with a four-speed manual transmission. Various mechanical refreshment was performed following the seller’s acquisition on BaT in March 2020 including re-lining the fuel tank, rebuilding the carburetors, overhauling the radio and clock, and replacing the fuel lines, fuel distribution manifold, wheel bearings, driveline bushings, and tires. It is finished in beige over tan leather and is also equipped with 13″ steel wheels, dual Solex carburetors, air conditioning, and an FM radio. Previously listed on BaT in June 2023, this 220S is now offered with a clean California title in the seller’s name.
The W180 “Ponton” models featured Pontoon-style bodywork with integrated fenders and a unit-body chassis design. This example originally left the factory finished in Light Blue and was repainted in its current beige under previous ownership. The car features a folding Webasto sunroof. Noted flaws include an area of touch-up below the right taillight, cracking rubber trim, stains on the trunk lid, and a scrape on the right-front fender.
Steel 13″ wheels wear body-color centers and are mounted with 185/80 Maxxis MA-1 white-stripe tires that show date codes from 2020. The suspension includes a double-wishbone front setup and a single-joint rear swing axle as well as front and rear coil springs. The tie-rod ends, brake master cylinder, brake booster, and brake hoses were replaced in 2022, and the front wheel cylinders were replaced in March 2023. Additional work in the past two years has reportedly included rebuilding the brake calipers, installing replacement front wheel bearings, and replacing various suspension bushings.
The cabin features tan leather seats, brown carpets, wood trim, air conditioning, and an FM receiver. The radio, clock, and A/C blower motor were rebuilt under current ownership per the selling dealer.
The wood dashboard houses a rectangular VDO clock and a 110-mph VDO strip speedometer with hash marks for gear selection. The speedometer was rebuilt in 2023. The five-digit odometer shows 82k miles, approximately 700 of which were added by the current owner. Total mileage is unknown.
The 2.2-liter M180 inline-six is equipped with dual Solex carburetors and produced 106 horsepower when new. The spark plugs and fuel filter assembly were replaced in 2021, and service in 2022 included cleaning the fuel tank and replacing the battery, starter, coolant hoses, and carburetor floats.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a column-shifted four-speed manual transmission. Service in 2022 included changing the transmission fluid and replacing the pinion seal, differential bushings, and differential mounts. Corrosion is noted on the underside.
