1954 Sunbeam Alpine

This 1954 Sunbeam Alpine is one of 1,582 examples built on the Marks I and III platforms between 1953 and 1955. Finished in red over tan leather, the car is powered by a 2,267cc OHV inline-four that breathes through a single downdraft carburetor and is mated to a floor-shifted four-speed manual transmission. Additional features include hydraulic drum brakes, coil-sprung independent front suspension, body-color 16” wheels, a beige convertible top, and side curtains with sliding windows. This Alpine is now offered on dealer consignment with manuals and a California title.

Based on the Sunbeam-Talbot 90 sedan and introduced in March 1953, the Alpine roadster was designed as a rally special and was hand-built by London coachbuilding firm Thrupp & Maberly. The model’s name was a nod to Sunbeam-Talbot’s successes in the Alpine Rally, which it built upon with four Coupes des Alpes entrants and a Coupe des Dames in the 1953 rendition of the event.

This example is finished in red with number 21 graphics on each door, and various imperfections in the finish and trim are shown up close in the photo gallery below. Features include chrome bumpers with guards at front and rear, Lucas driving lamps, a louvered hood, a fender-mounted antenna, dual side mirrors, and a beige convertible top with sliding-window side curtains.

Body-color steel wheels wears bright hubcaps and are wrapped in 5.50R16 Coker Classic whitewall tires. Stopping is handled by finned hydraulic drum brakes with duplex actuation at the front wheels.

The cabin is trimmed in tan leather over bucket seats for two, with matching upholstery over the door panels and upper dash. Additional features include color-keyed carpeting, black lap belts, a lockable glovebox, a dash-mounted rearview mirror, and a fire-suppression system.

The banjo-style steering wheel sits ahead of a 120-mph speedometer flanked by gauges monitoring fuel level, coolant temperature, amperage, and oil pressure. The five-digit odometer shows 4k miles. A 6k-rpm tachometer is situated at center dash.

The 2,267cc inline-four features three main bearings, a detachable cylinder head, overhead valves, and a single downdraft carburetor. Output was factory rated at 80 horsepower.

Power is sent to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission with synchromesh on its top three gears. Suspension incorporates coil-sprung control arms up front and a leaf-sprung solid axle at the rear. Armstrong lever-arm hydraulic shock absorbers are utilized all around. It is finish
