1953 Cadillac M41A1 Walker Bulldog Light Tank

This M41A1 Walker Bulldog is a light tank produced by Cadillac in 1953 and was acquired by the current owner approximately four years ago from a collector in New York. The vehicle features a de-milled 76mm M32 gun on a hydraulically operated turret, and power comes from a Continental AOS-895-3 flat-six linked to an Allison dual-range transmission. Additional equipment includes seating for a driver, commander, gunner, and loader as well as a telescope, periscopes, and ammunition storage. This M41A1 is now offered on dealer consignment in California with a bill of sale.

Dubbed the “Walker Bulldog” in homage to US Army General Walton Walker, the M41 light tank was produced by Cadillac from 1951 to 1954 using a welded steel hull. The M41A1 was introduced in December 1952 and incorporated numerous design changes including a hydraulically operated turret traverse with manual backup controls. Variants of the M41 remain in service around the world to this day.

This tank is said to have remained in a private collection for many years, and it is finished in olive drab with white graphics. The 76mm M32 gun has been de-milled, and a machine gun mount is located atop the turret. Corrosion and irregularities in the finish can be viewed in the gallery.

The steel tracks have rubber tread blocks, and each side rides on a 12-tooth drive sprocket, a dual-compensating front idler wheel, three return rollers, and five road wheels with individual torsion bars. Stopping power is provided by multiple disc brakes, and steering is achieved through mechanical T-bar controls.

The interior accommodates a crew of four with a commander, gunner, and loader in the turret. A telescope is accompanied by several periscopes, and storage racks and canisters remain in the tank.

The driver is positioned in the left-front section of the hull, and an escape hatch is located below the seat. Instrumentation consists of a 60-mph speedometer, a 5k-rpm tachometer, and gauges for fuel level and oil pressure. The five-digit odometer shows 3,200 miles, and an hour meter shows 521 hours.

The supercharged, air-cooled Continental AOS-895-3 flat-six is linked to an Allison CD-500-3 transmission with two forward ranges and a single reverse gear. Power is sent to the rear drive sprockets.
