1943 Dodge WC-57 Command Car

This 1943 Dodge WC-57 command car is one of a reported 6,010 units built for use by the US military. It was acquired by the current owner in 2018 and subsequently refurbished by Lasky Coachworks of Los Angeles, California, with work that involved repainting the body in olive drab, fitting a green canvas soft top, reupholstering the seats in brown vinyl, and replacing the radiator, fuel tank, tires, windshield, and wiper motors. Power is from a 230ci inline-six linked with a four-speed manual transmission and a single-speed transfer case. A Braden front winch is fitted, and other equipment includes a brush guard, 16″ steel wheels, blackout lights, a rear pintle hitch, a Farnsworth two-way radio, and a rear-mounted pick, axe, and shovel. This WC-57 is now offered on dealer consignment with records, a radio antenna, a first aid kit, a document box, a Plus-a-Gram record player, tools, a display board, a car show award, and a clean California title in the owner’s name.

The truck was refinished in olive drab with a satin-finish clear coat and military-style graphics by Lasky Coachworks. A replacement green canvas soft top covers the passenger compartment, and other equipment includes a Braden 7,600-lb winch, a brush guard, a fold-down windshield, blackout lights, a siren, dual mirrors, antenna and gun mounts, a rear pintle hitch, a folding tailgate, and a rear-mounted pick, axe, and shovel. A jerry can and collapsible bucket are mounted on the left running board, while a battery box is located on the right side of the truck. The windshield and wiper motors were replaced under current ownership.

Body-color 16″ steel wheels wear 9.00-series Firestone tires that were mounted under current ownership, and a full-size spare is secured to the left running board. Stopping power is from hydraulic drum brakes.

The front and rear benches were reupholstered in brown vinyl by Lasky Coachworks during the refurbishment, and lap belts are equipped up front. Details include body-color sheet metal, a textured rubber floor liner, instructional placards, occupant safety straps, and a slide-out work surface below the glove box.

The three-spoke steering wheel sits ahead of a 60-mph speedometer and gauges for voltage, amperage, oil pressure, fuel level, and coolant temperature. The five-digit odometer shows 2k miles, though total mileage is unknown. The selling dealer notes that the speedometer has been disconnected.

A Farnsworth BC-604-DM military two-way radio with a canvas cover is positioned in the rear compartment, and it is accompanied by a case containing frequency crystals.

The 230ci inline-six was factory rated at 92 horsepower and 180 lb-ft of torque, which is sent to the rear or all four wheels through a four-speed manual transmission and a single-speed transfer case. The radiator and fuel tank were replaced during the refurbishment.

A Plus-a-Gram record player and an assortment of records will accompany the truck along with records, an antenna for the two-way radio, a “general’s desk” document box, tools, an air pump, a first-aid kit, a display board, and a 2024 car show award from the Petersen automotive museum.
