This 1942 Autocar truck was originally produced as an M3 75 Gun Motor Carriage that received an M3A1 conversion by the US military before undergoing a conversion to M16A1 Multiple Gun Motor Carriage (MGMC) specification, which included the installation of multiple anti-aircraft gun mounts. Finished in olive drab, the truck is powered by a 386ci White 160AX gasoline inline-six that sends power to both axles through a four-speed manual transmission and a dual-range transfer case. Features include a rear-mounted pintle hitch, power steering, external jerry can mounts, dual side-view mirrors, and folding armor for the radiator, windshield, and side windows. This M16A1 half-track was purchased by the current owner on BaT in August 2021 and is now offered on dealer consignment at no reserve in Newbury Park, California, with a bill of sale.
The M16A1 half-track was an evolution of the previous M3 design and featured a number of upgrades, including an elevated mounting platform offering space for up to four machine guns. This truck is one of approximately 677 examples that were converted to M16A1 half-track specification by the US Military, and it is finished in olive drab with white stars, identification numbers, and “Terminator” branding. Exterior features include a front unditching roller, a rear pintle hitch, armored grille shutters, dual jerry can mounts, and folding armor over the windshield and side windows. Paint chips revealing red oxide primer underneath can be seen up close in the gallery below.
The front body-color multi-piece 20” steel wheels are mounted with Goodyear tires, while the rear features rubber-coated steel treads. The truck rides on elliptical leaf springs up front with a vertical volute suspension system out back. Stopping power is provided by hydraulically assisted drums at both axles.
The cabin features three seats trimmed in tan canvas with a green vinyl driver’s seat back and diamond-plate floors. The truck is equipped with power steering.
The three-spoke steering wheel sits ahead of a metal dash housing a 3,500-rpm tachometer, an 80-mph speedometer, and a combination gauge for amperage, fuel level, coolant temperature, and oil pressure. The five-digit odometer shows just under 162 miles, a few of which have been added under current ownership. Total mileage is unknown.
The rear of the cabin features multiple mounting points and storage compartments.
The White Motor Company 386ci 160AX gasoline inline-six features a single carburetor and was factory rated at 128 horsepower, which is sent to both axles through a four-speed manual transmission and dual-range transfer case.
Areas of corrosion on various underbody components are noted by the selling dealer.
