We hoped that our ‘87 911 Carrera would sell well and as of today were indeed not disappointed with the results when the auction was closed by a winning bid of $47,000 (plus fees)! The road rally prepped Porsche was mostly original, but the previous owner had several smart modifications performed to set it apart from the cars and coffee crowds making it an even more desirable 3.2 Carrera.
Standard U.S. market Carreras arrived new with around 217 horsepower, but this flat-six engine was recently rebuilt to higher European specifications. A high compression Mahle piston set, ARP rod bolts, hotter cams, and all of those increases in performance were personally dialed in by Steve Wong with a bespoke performance chip that increased power and torque which drivers can really feel. SSI heat exchangers, an MSDS air intake, and many maintenance parts were also installed during the recent renovations to keep the whole car performing at its peak.
Outside, the original factory Diamond Blue paint has signs of chipping, but a paint meter showed it to be authentic on almost every panel. The Diamond Blue paint itself a rare option was really set off with the standard black trim that was excellently complemented by aftermarket Fifteen52 Outlaw 001 semi-gloss black 16” wheels. Dropped down to European ride height with the help of RSR struts and stiffer front and rear torsion bars further improved handling performance and curb appeal.
Inside, the Marine Blue leather seats had some signs of wear and cracking but were in an exceptionally great condition commensurate with the 164,000-mileage. Marine blue carpeting and vinyl pieces finished off the interior and were protected by a factory set of floor mats embroidered with the word “Carrera.” Driver’s controls were altered to offer more sporting options such as a Porsche factory club sport three-spoke steering and a Momo shift knob covered in stitched leather. Optioned from Porsche to have a Blaupunkt Reno SQR 46 cassette/radio that unit was removed and in its place, a newer, better performing Becker Monza radio with CD player which was connected to a trunk-mounted amplifier.
We hope that the new owner greatly enjoys their new Porsche. Indeed, the final iteration of the original 911 generation is, but with the engine, suspension, and aesthetic upgrades this Carrera has come into its own. Happy motoring!
