Limousine of the Elite – 1965 Mercedes-Benz 600 to Auction Soon

Indoctrinated early amongst the highest echelons of the world’s aristocracy, Mercedes’ 600, by the discontinuation of its production in 1981, was renown for its distinguished service to business magnates, influential superstars, and ruthless dictators. What would become the final successor to Mercedes line of ultra-luxury sedans, the 600 is the spiritual predecessor to the modern S-Class. However, in the physical aspects of craftsmanship, quality, and attention to details, 600s reside on an entirely higher plateau of esteem than its grandchild. Our example coming to auction was built during the second year of production in 1965, registering it as a classic of the sixties. The bidding begins next week, but we have some of the details here for you now.

When construction finished in 1965, this 600 was painted in a medium glossy grey. The color has been reapplied at one time, and the finish is still in fair condition. Although a bit tarnished, the chrome exterior trim is still firmly attached. Complimenting the exterior are color-matched hubcaps on 15” stamped steel wheels that wear white-wall tires. Compared to modern cars, the 600 is still a behemoth of a vehicle, and with at 126” wheelbase, that stature endows it with elegant ride quality characteristics and comfort.

Inside, black leather and hand-laid wood quickly engender an air of excellence. The hydraulically-powered front seats have newer black leather covers across them; while the back bench wears its factory-supplied hides. A set of footrests, rear curtains, and wind deflectors make the back seats the ideal location for luxurious appreciation. Nevertheless, the 600 is a smooth driver thanks to its large, power assisted steering and automatic gearbox. Drivers receive vehicle information through a cluster of analog gauges encased in carved wood. A Becker Grand Prix radio is installed in the dashboard and turns on but fails to project sound. Additionally, a power sunroof lets a bit more light in during lazy cruises. Durable grey carpeting completes the interior ensemble.

Coaxing this mobile-casino to speed is a simply massive 6.3-liter V8 engine specially designed for the release of the 600. When new, the M100 motor was rated at 300 horsepower and was focused on the smoothness of operation to compliment the silken suspension. Below, the suspension features hydraulically-actuated dampers that raise and lower the entire car. The current owner remarks about some noise from the driveline while cresting bumps.

Initially sold in California and issued black license plates reading RYP 600, our 600 is a driver that still strongly elicits a high-class allure. Previously owned by the Petersen Automotive Museum, the Mercedes went to Canada for a brief period before ultimately ending up in New York state. In total, over 90,000 miles have been registered to the five-digit odometer. This Mercedes is soon to be offered complete with an incomplete spare tool kit, original full-size spare tire, Petersen documents, importation certificates, factory manuals in a leather portfolio, and New York registration. Do not miss out on this chance to own the car every dictator dreamed about!
