The second generation of BMW 5-series was the era in which it firmly established itself as an executive car with class and cutting-edge technological performance. Ultimately over 700,000 would be sold during its seven-year period in the 1980s – double the sales of the first generation. BMW utilized computer design software to improve not only engineering equipment but also its safety and efficiency features. Optional ABS, electronic fuel injection, lightweight technologies, and a newly developed suspension arrangement made for just some of the highlights this revolutionary 5-series brought forth. In entirety, it was a technological avant-garde assault that pushed the limits of the sedan further into sports car rivaling territory and coming up for sale soon is one of the best examples of the 5-series in all of the United States.
Bronzit Beige metallic (option 139) paint covers the sharp, box-angled exterior of this 1988 535i and is in absolutely immaculate condition. The side mirror housings have been color matched to the body, which nicely removes some of the excessive original black plastic trim finishing. Chrome European front and rear bumpers happily retire the bulky and unsightly U.S.-market versions. Modestly lowered with aftermarket suspension components the natural stance now appears aggressive and taut, especially above the gorgeous 17” BBS Style 5 wheels. Thankfully, the suspension elements do not sacrifice comfort or ride quality for outright handling.
Beneath that brilliant bronze body is a tanned leather and technologically indulgent playground. The second generation 5-series was the first BMW sedan to offer drivers a focused control center that angled consoles toward them. This made the left-seat feel less like a car seat and more like a battle command center. Furthering the feeling of command, BMW electronically adjustable sports seats have replaced the factory-supplied touring seats and provide superior lateral holding aside from the exciting visual enhancement. Recovered in interior matching Llama leather (option 209) the front seats are in like-new condition and perfectly match the rear bench. An M-Tech sports steering wheel with the tri-color BMW Motorsport division band at the 6-o’clock spoke completes the sport-driving inspired interior.
Under the hood is the original M30 inline-six cylinder that was initially good for 184-horsepower. Connected to a five-speed manual transmission and recently renewed with maintenance and mechanical upgrades, this 535i feels closer to M-spec without appearing as a poseur. Coming to sale with a clean California title, a clean Carfax report since 1991, the factory books, and even an additional BBS Style 5 wheel is this 535i that must not be missed out on!
