Stuttgart, 1964, the first Porsche 911s begin rolling off the assembly line and on to dealerships; unbeknownst at the time was how influential they were to become. Fast-forward to 1984, some twenty-one years after that launch and the original 911, to some degrees, was still in production and available for purchase new. Known as the G-series, the 1984-1989 Carrera models were the very last of the 911s to be revised off of the original production plans. The 964 which followed was the first nearly-complete overhaul, making the G-series considerably unique since it retains purely analog driving systems. Set to be auctioned next week is a 1988 Carrera Targa, representing one of the final years of “original” 911 production.
The Targa coming to sale is coated in the deep shade of Marine Blue with a brightly contrasting Linen leather interior including matching carpeting. The Linen colored carpeting, despite its natural proclivity to discoloration, remains relatively untainted considering its age. The 217 horsepower, 3.2-liter flat-six motor has worked for 91,000 miles and still operates like a champion. To prepare for its sale, the current owner had new oil and a filter installed less than 100 miles ago. The owner informs us that a buildup of moisture on the engine case is present, despite some light engine work in July of 2018. The original 16” Fuchs wheels (black center with polished metal circumference) and the factory Blaupunkt radio are still present.
