Sometimes a vehicle comes along that transcends just being a special car. It becomes a time capsule transporting you back to an iconic era, encapsulating the spirits of its time. The 1984 VW Rabbit Convertible recently featured in Car and Driver definitely fits that bill.
Automotive writer, Brendan McAleer, describes the VW Rabbit’s unique style. “The original Volkswagen Rabbit (first-gen Golf in other markets) wasn’t an obvious candidate for a convertible body style, being a hatchback and all. But VW did it, with a basket-handle roll bar and a folded cloth top stacked behind the rear seat. Introduced in 1979, the pint-sized convertible with seating for four was virtually impossible to beat for fun in the sun.”
WOB Cars managed the auction for this vehicle on Bring a Trailer. The specialty car dealer’s founder, Robert Dietz, has a soft spot for VW Rabbit Convertibles, recalling his mother had always wanted one.
He shared, “My mother wanted one so badly but aside from the fact that we couldn’t afford one, she thought she would be seen as being too fancy. Something that I still remember and get a laugh from, but certainly makes me love them even more. I have always enjoyed driving them and the 80s VW experience was enjoyable then as it is today. And something about the big tall roof up or down felt like it had Beetle lineage and just made for a big smile while driving.”
The auction has already drawn to a close, with an excited new owner ready to carry the torch for this radiant piece of automotive history.
